The backup server can be connected through FTP, SSH and Rsync. The files can be backed up and/or retrieved through any of these protocols.

FTP: FTP is the easiest protocol of the three and end users most familiar with. The trade off is that it is slow and insecure compared to the other protocols

Rsync: Rsync when used greatly improves efficiency when compared to other backup methods. Rsync can be configured to synchronise only those files which are changed/added after the last backup had been taken, which will result in large bandwidth savings. When combined with on-the-fly compression, performing daily rsync backup can result in less data transfer than it would take to perform two backups using the .tar.gz method in a given time.

SSH/SCP: This can be used if sensitive data is being backed up. The use of SSH protocol will ensure security of the data over the network. The backup scheme can be tied with Rsync/SSH where data security and speed is required.
